Suitable for players of any age, Ultimate Frisbee is a popular, non-contact game with relatively simple rules. The game uses a Frisbee, also called a flying disk, and is played by two teams of seven players on a football-sized field. The goal is to get the Frisbee into the end zone of the opposing team to score points. This is done by completing a pass in the end zone of the defending team.
The game starts with the Frisbee being thrown by the defense team to the offense team. A player in possession of the Frisbee is not permitted to run, and must throw it within 10 seconds of catching it to move it down the field by passing it to a player on their same team. Any player not in possession of the disk is allowed to run in order to catch the Frisbee if it has been thrown by a team member, or to intercept a pass if it has been thrown by a member of the opposing team.
Ultimate Frisbee was invented by a Columbia High School student named Joel Silver, who subsequently copyrighted the name of the game. The first game was held at his high school in 1968, and different schools started playing against one another in 1970. By 1972, the game was played at the collegiate level, initially as a match between Rutgers and Princeton. Now an event included at the World Games, Ultimate Frisbee is a firmly established sport in which athletes compete to win medals.
